Physiokey Therapy

The Physiokey device uses biofeedback stimulation to activate the body’s natural pain relieving and self-regulation mechanisms.

When the body is injured or ill the Physiokey helps to regain homeostasis by finding and treating problem areas. The Physiokey device measures the nature of imbalances in the body by interpreting electrical resistance along the surface of the skin; this reading is a reflection of the internal state of health.

The Physiokey does this by sending small, very short duration electro-impulses via the skin to the brain that mimic the body’s nervous system. When the signal reaches the brain it begins a dialogue through the skin with the Physiokey device. Based on its readings, appropriate settings are entered, enabling the Physiokey to input electrical signals to the brain suggesting a state of homeostasis, a process which then stimulates the body’s own healing mechanisms. This is known as reflex biofeedback allows you to feel immediate results.

This stimulation of the hypothalamus in the brain stimulates C type nerve fibres, triggering the release of neuropeptides, which include natural pain killers such as endorphins and enkephalins, as well as neurotransmitters like serotonin, affecting pain perception, mood, and sleep regulation. The Physiokey signal can be quite a chaotic signal but because it lasts only 18 milliseconds it is too short for the brain to register pain but long enough for the brain to know it should release neuropeptides. The C fibres do not normally release neuropeptides unless a lot of pain is present. The Physiokey process asks the brain hundreds of times per second in a language it understands, to bring the body back to balance by using it’s innate self repair ability.

What happens during a Physiokey treatment?

Carol will brush the Physiokey device along areas of your skin so that electrical impulses are transmitted into your body to facilitate healing. It is normal to feel a tingling sensation but no pain, you will be encouraged to report any changes you feel or sensations you experience. It is not necessary to be able to feel the slight current for the repair to occur. The aim is to achieve a “change” in your condition during treatment.

You may feel an increase in discomfort for up to 24 hours after the Physiokey treatment. This temporary discomfort is a natural part of the self-repair cycle as your body is responding quickly and the healing process is activated. You will be asked to keep note of changes after your treatments and bring them to your next session as this will help target your next treatment.

The most common side effect people observe after treatment is increased redness on the areas of skin treated. In rare instances, skin itch or headache from detoxification of the body may occur.

You are not a candidate for Physiokey treatment if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, other electrical implants, or are prone to seizures.

Who can benefit from Physiokey treatments?

By releasing neuropeptides Physiokey is a holistic treatment modality resulting in the brain treating everything that it considers a problem, naturally concentrating on the greatest problem areas. Treatments as soon as possible after an injury occurs are the most productive. Most chronic conditions also respond well to treatment over time and assist in controlling chronic pain. Regular treatments can build quickly on each other resulting in a faster resolution of problems.

You can benefit from Physiokey treatments if you have:

  • Acute or chronic pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Limited range of motion
  • Post-surgery rehabilitation
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Trapped nerve conditions
  • Poor circulation
  • Inflammation
